My Sewing Room: Ribbon Organization

I have a lot of ribbon.  I don't know if other people save every scrap of ribbon, but I do.  I just love ribbon, ric rac, and trim.  When I was thinking about how to decorate my sewing room,  I knew I wanted to do something with glass jars and ribbon.  Since my children are addicted to applesauce, I saved all the applesauce jars for a few months and "designed this piece of art".  I put that in quotations because I hardly can claim credit for designing such a simple thing, and I don't know that it's really art- more just a practical and pretty storage solution.

Each jar contains a different color.  Some colors have more than one jar.... like pink, which has three jars, so it is then sorted into different shades (hot pink, bubble gum pink, light pink, etc).  When one jar gets full, I just make my kids eat more applesauce so I can divide it into two jars.  :)

I have plans to paint this shelf soon, but not sure about the color I should choose.  Thoughts?

Sometimes the ribbon does get wrinkled, but I usually iron it before sewing it onto a project.  I just love the way it looks all squished in the jars!

I love this! Can I come hang out in your sewing room, I don't think I'd ever leave. White or chocolate brown are always good warm colors for shelves that have lots of color on them. I also like to use turquoise blue, too, because its still somewhat neutral, but more fun than the typical neutrals. -Bridget

  6. Thank you, thank you! for this idea. I also save ribbon scraps and have been going back and forth on ideas for "viewable" storage that looks good!

  7. I save ribbon scraps too. I wind them into a small circle and use a straight pin to keep them closed otherwise I'd have a serious tangle of ribbon on my hands.

I love the symmetry of your ribbon storage.

  16. Good idea, I love ribbon so much!! I can put ribbons on almost anything!!! or at least I wish I could. I like how you put them in the jars, I wish I have a sewing room, for now I have to keep my ribbons in the box they are in. I think a green will give it life!! then it will look like you have bunch of flowers growing in your wall!

  17. Love how you sort them into colors, I thought I ws good by using doll pegs to keep ribbons on but never thought about seperating colors!

As for the shelf, how about a fun rainbow effect to go with all the lovely ribbons!

  20. I love how the ribbon looks in the jars!! I have to do something with my ribbon too...it's getting out of control.

I recycle jars to store my buttons and little embellishments in for my craft room...I never thought to put my ribbon in jars...that might be my solution. :)

  22. I think you should paint your shelf black. The beautiful colored ribbon would really "pop" against the black...kinda like the beautiful Amish quilts. Love your sewing room and organizing ideas.
